A page can hold first place in Google and still fail to influence a buyer. That is the problem behind AEO vs SEO: rankings and organic sessions show only part of the customer journey.
When Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot answer a question, people may see your brand before they visit a website. They may also receive an answer without clicking anywhere. Businesses therefore need to measure citations, accuracy, qualified leads and revenue alongside traditional search performance.
AEO vs SEO: Two visibility jobs, one search strategy
Traditional SEO focuses on helping pages rank for relevant searches. Its familiar measures include keyword positions, impressions, click-through rate, organic sessions, conversions and revenue attributed to organic traffic.
Answer engine optimisation adds another question: can an AI system identify your business, select the right page and describe your offer accurately?
That difference matters because a top-ranking page may never appear in an AI-generated response. Likewise, an answer engine might cite a page that ranks outside Google’s top results. Optimizely’s SEO and AEO comparison describes SEO as helping search engines find content, while AEO helps AI systems understand and use it.
| Area | Traditional SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Main outcome | A visible result and website visit | Inclusion in a generated answer |
| Typical queries | Keywords and search phrases | Conversational questions and follow-ups |
| Core metrics | Rankings, impressions, clicks and sessions | Mentions, citations, recommendations and answer share |
| Website role | Destination for the visitor | Source that supports the answer |
| Main risk | Losing position or traffic | Being omitted, misrepresented or linked to the wrong page |
| Commercial proof | Leads, sales and organic revenue | AI-influenced leads, assisted conversions and revenue |
The two approaches work best together. Strong SEO gives answer engines useful pages to retrieve, whilst AEO improves clarity, extractability and brand representation. A business still needs technical SEO, useful content, internal links, digital PR and credible third-party references.

Why rankings and organic traffic no longer tell the whole story
Rankings are observable within a defined search tool, location, device and time period. Organic clicks are also measurable in Google Search Console and analytics platforms. However, neither metric shows every time a customer encounters your brand in an AI answer.
A July 2025 Pew Research Center study examined 68,879 real Google searches from 900 US adults. Users clicked a traditional result in 8% of searches that showed an AI Overview, compared with 15% when no overview appeared. Only 1% clicked a link within the overview itself. The study used US data, so it isn’t a universal benchmark for Ireland or the UK, but it shows why a strong ranking may produce fewer visits when an answer satisfies the immediate question.
AI visibility also has a measurement problem. Citation rate, share of model voice and answer sentiment are platform-dependent estimates, not fixed rankings. Results can change according to the prompt wording, location, date, device, browsing settings and platform index.
That makes repeatable testing more important than a single impressive result. A brand appearing once in ChatGPT has been observed in one response. It hasn’t earned a stable position equivalent to a Google ranking.
What to measure beyond rankings
Citation rate and competitor share
Citation rate is the percentage of tracked prompts that cite one of your relevant pages. Start with a fixed set of 20 to 50 real customer questions, then compare results over time.
Track citation share against competitors as well. If your business appears in 20% of relevant answers and a competitor appears in 45%, your absolute visibility may be improving whilst your competitive position is weakening.
Platform coverage adds another useful measure. Record whether your pages appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and other relevant systems. No platform provides a complete view, so coverage across several surfaces gives a more balanced picture.
A mention names your business. A citation points to a source that supports the answer. A recommendation may influence a buyer even without a link, whilst a clickable citation offers a route to your website and a way to verify the claim.
Accuracy, freshness and source quality
A high mention rate doesn’t prove that AEO is working. An AI answer might list an old service area, outdated pricing, an incorrect platform capability or a description that weakens your commercial position.
Record whether:
- The brand appears with the correct name and description.
- The cited page is current and relevant.
- The answer gives the correct service area, products or contact details.
- The source supports the claim being made.
- The wording reflects the position you want buyers to understand.
- Competitors receive a stronger or more accurate recommendation.
You can calculate an accuracy rate by measuring the percentage of important prompts that produce a current, compliant description of the business. Also count citations pointing to outdated pages. These figures turn a vague visibility concern into a content and governance issue that a team can fix.
AI referrals and branded demand
GA4 can show referral sessions from platforms such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. Review landing pages, engagement, form submissions and conversion rates rather than reporting visits alone. A small number of highly qualified AI referrals may matter more than a large volume of low-intent traffic.
Google Search Console can show changes in branded searches after a period of increased AI visibility. That lift is a lagging indicator, not proof of causation. Users may see a recommendation, remember the name and return through Google later.
Human Agency’s AEO measurement overview also distinguishes conventional SEO metrics such as rankings and click-through rate from AI citation frequency. Use that distinction in reporting so brand awareness, source visibility and website traffic don’t become one unclear number.
Connect AEO activity to leads, pipeline and revenue
AEO reporting becomes useful when it reaches the CRM. The aim isn’t to prove that every sale came from an AI answer. The aim is to identify whether answer visibility appears alongside qualified demand and commercial progress.
Take a real customer question such as, “Which Irish agency can help a small retailer migrate to WooCommerce?” A business offering that service can monitor whether its migration page appears, whether the citation links to the correct URL and whether the answer describes the service accurately.
Then connect the visibility record with commercial data:
- Record the prompt, platform, date, location and device.
- Save the brand mention, cited page, competitor presence and answer wording.
- Review AI referral sessions and landing-page actions in GA4.
- Match enquiries and opportunities in the CRM to the relevant landing page or campaign.
- Ask sales teams whether prospects mention ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or an AI recommendation.
- Compare qualified lead rate, opportunity value and closed revenue with other acquisition sources.
Some measures are directly observed, such as a referral session, completed form, sales note or closed opportunity. Others are estimated. Assisted revenue may use a multi-touch model, whilst AI-influenced revenue may combine survey responses, branded-search growth and CRM notes.
Attribution will remain incomplete. A buyer could read an answer in ChatGPT, return through a branded Google search, book a call by telephone and never create an identifiable AI referral. Some AI-assisted visits may also appear as direct traffic.
A simple “How did you hear about us?” field can capture influence that analytics misses. Add options for AI search, a recommendation from an AI tool and an unprompted text response. Treat these responses as supporting evidence, not a perfect measurement system.

Build a repeatable AEO measurement programme
Start with customer language, not invented keyword variations. Collect questions across services, locations and buying stages. Include prompts about price, suitability, delivery areas, integrations, timescales and alternatives.
For an Irish business, test location-specific wording such as Dublin, Wicklow or nationwide service coverage where those details affect the buying decision. Record the location because an answer shown in Dublin may differ from one shown elsewhere.
Run the same prompt set monthly for priority services. Keep a baseline before changing important pages. One successful response doesn’t establish a trend, so compare citation rate, competitor share, platform coverage and accuracy across several reporting periods.
Commercial tools such as Ahrefs Brand Radar and Profound can help monitor AI mentions and citations. They should sit alongside Google Search Console, GA4, CRM records and sales feedback. No single dashboard captures the full journey.
Content changes should improve both human usefulness and machine clarity. Put a direct answer near the beginning of important pages, usually in a concise paragraph of around 30 to 60 words. Follow it with evidence, limits, examples, pricing factors, service details and a clear next step. Question-based headings and short self-contained paragraphs make important passages easier to retrieve without stripping away context.
Structured data can clarify the relationships between an organisation, service, product, author and location. JSON-LD is usually the easiest format to maintain. Use types such as Organization, Service, Product, LocalBusiness or BreadcrumbList only when they accurately describe visible page content.
Validate schema with Google’s Rich Results Test, then inspect the live URL in Search Console after publishing or changing templates. Schema can improve interpretation and eligibility for some search features, but it can’t guarantee a ranking, voice answer or AI citation.
Conclusion
The AEO vs SEO comparison isn’t a choice between two separate marketing programmes. SEO still earns rankings, clicks, links and trust. AEO adds measurement for the answers that shape decisions before a website visit.
Track citation rate, competitor share, platform coverage and answer accuracy alongside rankings, branded searches, qualified leads and revenue. Separate observed results from estimated influence, then use CRM and sales feedback to close the gaps in analytics.
A top-three ranking remains valuable, but accurate representation in an answer is now part of search performance. The businesses that measure both will see more of the journey their customers already take.
